Dallas, TX -- Feb 01, 2011 / (http://www.myprgenie.com/) -- What is the proper serving size for rice, meat or vegetables? One cup, two cups, who knows? Why? We have never seen one. Restaurants serve huge portions and we plate the same way at home. Healthy Steps by Jokari offers four ways that portion control kitchen tools can assist those serious about living a healthier lifestyle.

"It takes more than just shopping smart and eating right to have a healthy diet. We must know what foods are right for us and how to maintain a good balance in our lives and on our plates," shared Doug Taeckens, President and CEO of Healthy Steps by Jokari.

He continued "Our simple solution tools are designed to help control portion sizes, making it easier to eat right even with the busiest of schedules."

Healthy Steps by Jokari is a perfect way to get the portion right every time. For example, the Portion Control Pasta Basket cooks a precise amount of pasta, as you measure and cook with the same tool. The Portion Control Vegetable Server is a slit spoon measuring a half-serving of cooked vegetables, minus the steaming liquid.

Get a fresh start today with four ways to improve your everyday food consumption.

• Learn portions--USDA just announced new dietary guidelines. One idea they emphasized was portion control. Healthy Steps has over 22 kitchen tools to simplfy this daily concern. According to www.myPyramid.gov, on average a women eating an 1800-calorie a day diet should consume the following each day. Grains - 6 ounces, vegetables - 2.5 cups, fruits - 1.5 cups, milk - 3 cups, meats and beans - 5 ounces.

• Plan portions-Proper portions begin at the grocery store, especially if you buy in bulk. Take the time to store smaller amounts of pastas, meats, vegetables, fruits and grains. When you reach for an ingredient to prepare, you have just what you and your family need without excess or waste.

• Shop, save and share-When shopping grab the buy one get one free deals. If the food is perishable share it with a friend and you both save.

• Prepare portions-Prepare only what you will eat for one meal or double up on a recipe and plan for leftovers. Serve one meal and store the other one properly, label it with the dish name, date and place it in the freezer.

  5. I totally agree with preparing in portions. What I normally do is buy in bulk and I keep a stock of freezer bags at home so I can prepare them as per meal requirements so that it would be easier thawing when you need it.
